Discussions and Ideas Forum

Here is a page which we can share our ideas and discussions. If you have any further inquiries, don't hesitate to contact me at: allancho@gmail.com

The Need for the "Link"

(1) How to create Link & Exposure of SLAIS to UBC undergraduates

(2) Lots of students don’t know about SLAIS

(3) Librarianship is underrepresented (and perhaps undervalued?) in the academic community

(4) Peter Ward Deputy Librarian at UBC – Professor of History - now's the chance to bridge the gap?

(5) Extend awareness to Asian Studies, First Nations studies, MAPPS, History

What's in a Name?

Multilingual (Multicultural) SLAIS Committee

(1) We need a name for this committee, to summarize what we're aiming for.

(2) We started out as a "Chinese Committee," then extended it to include all languages, "Multilingual Committee"

(3) Edie has pointed out that mulilingual might not be the best; rather, she suggested "multicultural" or "cross-cultural" to properly represent different components of this project

Emphasis

(1) This project started off intended for "Chinese" focus

(2) Joe suggested broadening it to include other languages as well, namely First Nations

(3) Ann Doyle likes the idea of creating a Chinese Component first as a "model" for which others can follow later on

(4) Question: is it viable for creating: (a) one without the other; (b) both together; or (c) altogether?

(5) Chinese, First Nations, French, Japanese, Spanish etc. etc.?

Workshop

(1) Henry Yu is the Association principal at St. John's College at UBC (http://www.stjohns.ubc.ca/); and has offered space for a potential workshop

(2) Participants could include Dr. Clara Chu from UCLA (http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/chu/) and Anna U (http://www.giving.utoronto.ca/chairs/showchairs.asp?ID=82)

(3) Why a workshop? Because: (a) brings us together; (b) shows a presence within the academic community; (c) ignites more ideas and inspiration

UBC-to-SLAIS

(1) Henry has suggested the idea of a "track" from History to UBC

(2) He has a history student who has expressed interest in going to librarianship, but does not know too much of the opportunities due to SLAIS' relative obscurity at the undergraduate level

Chinese Canadian Library Association

(1) Jing Liu has offered the suggestion that Chinese students have come to her in the past for a creation of a Chinese Student Interest Group/Committee

(2) This has never materialized because Chinese students (mainly from Mainland China) tend to move on after their studies

(3) Jing says, why not a Chinese Canadian Library Association?

(4) This would be modeled after the Chinese American Library Association (CALA) http://www.white-clouds.com/cala/

(5) This would be years down the road, but the possibilities are intriguing and exciting, and worth the pursuit!

(6) CCLA would require two things in particular: (a) constitution; (b) online journal

(7) Jing's blog is indicative of a strong presence of a network, with postings by different authors - http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/jingliu/
